We received a great email/letter today from Mark Nash, Director, The Canadian Peregrine Foundation.
To: Nor’Wester Mountain Escarpment Protection Committee (NMEPC)
RE: Wind farming in environmentally sensitive areas.
We are delighted to support the efforts of the Nor’Wester Mountain Escarpment Protection Committee (NMEPC) in their position of the proposed wind farm in this area. While the Canadian Peregrine Foundation supports renewable energy schemes in principal, providing that they are environmentally sound and safe. We also believe that any and all wind farming projects of this kind should never be located or sited in or near to environmentally sensitive areas.
After more than 35 years of a National Peregrine Recovery program here in Canada, (and in particular here in Ontario), we have more than 90% of Ontario’s recovering peregrine population situated in these northern regions. Sadly, many of these surrounding areas and critical habitats are already all under enormous pressures as a result of other industrial and commercial development
activities.
There is still much investigation needed to understand both the short and long term effects on the environment in consideration with all of our flora and fauna. Due diligence and care must be taken to protect these sensitive habitats and ecosystems.
Sincerely
Mark Nash
